An Everything alternative for Mac
Everything by voidtools is the fastest way to find a file on Windows, but it has no Mac version. Everyfile brings the same idea to macOS: type a few letters and every matching file on every drive is there.
Is there Everything for Mac?
No. Everything is made by voidtools for Windows only. Mac users have asked for a version for years, and some run it through Wine or CrossOver. That works only in part: Mac drives have no NTFS index, so Everything falls back to a slow folder scan.
Everyfile is a separate app, built natively for macOS. It is not made by voidtools and has no connection to them.
Why Everything is so fast, and how Everyfile does it on a Mac
On Windows, Everything reads the NTFS Master File Table, one table with every file on the drive, and then follows the NTFS change journal. Searching is a scan of names held in memory.
macOS has no such table. Everyfile reads each drive once with a fast system call that returns many files at a time, keeps the names in a compact index, and then follows macOS file system events. On a MacBook with an M4 Pro chip it reads one million files in 2.2 seconds and 7.3 million in about 25 seconds. After that it only reads what changed, even after a restart.
The search syntax you already know
You can keep your habits. Everyfile understands the same kind of queries:
| remix flac | Both words in the name |
| house | techno | Either word |
| !demo | Name without “demo” |
| "late nights" | Exact phrase |
| *.wav or ext:wav;aiff | By extension |
| size:>100mb | Larger than 100 MB |
| dm:today dm:2025-10 | Changed today, or in October 2025 |
| path:/Clients/ | Inside a folder path |
| folder: file: | Only folders, only files |
| case: regex: | Case-sensitive, regular expression |
What is the same, what is different
| Everything (Windows) | Everyfile (Mac) | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Windows | macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon |
| Where the index comes from | NTFS Master File Table + change journal | Own index + macOS file system events |
| Results while you type | Yes | Yes |
| Search syntax (ext:, size:, dm:, path:) | Yes | Yes |
| Drives that are unplugged | Not searchable | Still searchable (Pro) |
| Audio columns: bitrate, BPM, key | — | Yes (Pro) |
| Duplicate finder | — | Yes (Pro), never deletes |
| Price | Free | Free; Pro as a one-time purchase |
Made for drives that move between Mac and Windows
External drives that travel between both systems collect ._ files, Thumbs.db and desktop.ini. Everyfile hides them by default and shows them when you type junk:. FAT32, exFAT and NTFS drives are searched like any other drive.
