About

Everyfile is a Mac app that searches the names of every file on every drive as you type: internal, external, even unplugged. It keeps its own small index, follows changes through macOS file events, and works on FAT32 and exFAT drives that Spotlight often skips. Searching is read-only; in the result list you can open, show, rename (F2) or move a file to the Trash. It is built by one developer, runs fully on your Mac, has no account and sends no file names anywhere. The Free version is free; Pro (audio columns, duplicate finder, unplugged drives) is planned at €24 once and is not on sale yet.

Status, honestly

Everyfile is a beta (version 0.1.0). It is signed ad hoc and not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS blocks the first launch: open the app once, then System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to “Security” and click Open Anyway.

Not there yet: Apple notarization, buying Pro, automatic updates, the space report for system junk and the command line tool in the download. The translations (8 languages) are machine-made and being reviewed. The full list is on the home page under “What’s not here yet”.

Key facts

  • Platform: macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon. Not in the Mac App Store, because the sandbox would block the Full Disk Access it needs.
  • Search speed: with 2 million file names, 95 of 100 keystrokes were answered within 5 milliseconds (synthetic test tree, MacBook with an M4 Pro chip).
  • First read: 1.02 million files in 2.2 seconds (synthetic tree, warm cache); 7.3 million files on the internal SSD in about 25 seconds. After that Everyfile only follows what changes.
  • External drives: speed is set by the drive. Our FAT32 test SSD delivers about 12,000 files per second whatever the app.
  • Memory: under 80 MB per million files.
  • Privacy: the index stays on your Mac. No account, no analytics, no file name leaves the Mac.
  • Languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese (Brazil), Dutch, Japanese (machine-translated, under review).
  • Price: Free. Pro €24 once, planned for 1.0.
