Search syntax

The basics

Type words; a file is found when its name contains all of them, in any order. Upper and lower case do not matter, and neither do accents (cafe finds Café).

  • foo bar: both words (AND).
  • foo | bar: either (OR). a b | c means (a AND b) OR c.
  • !foo: not containing foo.
  • "foo bar": the exact phrase. Inside quotes, |, ! and : are plain characters.
  • * and ? are wildcards (many characters, one character) and match the whole name: *.mp3, IMG_????.jpg.

Switches

  • case: turns on case-sensitive matching for the rest of the query. case:Remix matches only that spelling. nocase: turns it off again.
  • regex: turns on regular expressions for the rest of the query. regex:^IMG_\d+ matches one name. Quoted words stay plain text.

Files and folders

  • ext:mp3 or ext:mp3;flac;wav (also with commas): by extension, without a dot.
  • folder: shows only folders, file: only files. With a value they also match the name: folder:backup.
  • path:Music/Rock or in:Music/Rock: the path must contain this text.
  • junk: shows only system junk (._*, .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and the like). Junk is hidden from normal results.

Size

size: takes a number with a unit: b, k/kb, m/mb, g/gb, t/tb (1 KB = 1024 bytes). No unit means bytes.

  • size:>100mb, size:>=1g, size:<10k, size:<=500kb, size:=0.
  • A range: size:1mb..10mb.

Date modified

dm: (or datemodified:) takes today, yesterday, or a date as 2026, 2026-03, 2026-03-14. A year or a month covers the whole year or month.

  • dm:today, dm:2026-03, dm:>=2026-01-01, dm:<2025.
  • A range: dm:2026-01..2026-03.

Audio fields

These read the tags of music files. Numbers can use >, >=, <, <= or a range with ...

  • Text: artist:, title:, album:, genre:, key:, codec: (for example artist:miles, codec:flac).
  • bitrate: or br: in kbit/s: bitrate:>=320, br:128..256.
  • bpm: (with a little tolerance for a single value): bpm:120..130.
  • dur:, duration: or length:: dur:>6m, dur:3:30..5:00. Units s, m, h, ms, or m:ss.
  • year:: year:1990..1999.
  • samplerate:, rate: or sr:: sr:44.1k, rate:>=96khz.
  • bits:, bitdepth: or depth:: bits:24.
  • channels: or ch:: channels:stereo, ch:mono, ch:>2.
  • lossless: (alone or lossless:no): lossless or lossy files.

Examples

  • *.pdf size:>5mb: large PDFs.
  • invoice dm:2026 ext:pdf;docx: invoices from this year.
  • folder:node_modules: all node_modules folders.
  • ext:mp3 bitrate:<192 !live: low-quality MP3s that are not live recordings.
  • artist:coltrane lossless: dur:>8m: long lossless tracks by one artist.
  • path:Downloads dm:today: what landed in Downloads today.

Good to know

  • An operator that is not in this list (for example foo:bar) is searched as plain text.
  • An operator with a malformed value (size:big) gives an error message instead of a guess.
